Michael Houlihan (LinkedIn: /michael-houlihan-2a24b818) is a guy who definitely doesn’t know how to sit still. He’s the CEO of Mainstream Superannuation Services  – a Superannuation Administration House, CEO of a small industry super fund, part owner of a Financial Planning firm and Director of a Research Firm, and that’s just his professional life.

He’s a wealth of knowledge in the finance space, which is why we sat down with Michael for a deep dive discussion into the history, the differences and the future of industry and retail funds, how to raise consumer engagement around super, why he believes the superannuation landscape will look vastly different in five years, passive vs. active investing and Michael’s process for choosing appropriate direct investments.

This episode is certainly relevant to all advisers and highlights some thought-provoking ideas and opinions on a wide range of topics.

Since pivoting from financial advice into a more permanent mortgage broking role, Marcus Roberts (@mrmarcusroberts) of Brighter Finance (www.brighterfinance.com.au) is the co-creator and co-host of the new Sydney Property Insider podcast (www.sydneypropertyinsider.com.au). A B2C podcast created with the intentions of providing property purchasing advice without the hard sell (no off-the-plan spruiking here!).

This episode is one part stand-up comedy and one part thought-provoking discussion with Marcus sharing the process, the costs and considerations of setting up a new B2C podcast in the finance space, why he chose a podcast over blogging and why he shifted from Advice to Mortgage Broking (and is killing it in the referral space).

She’s been dubbed the ‘Walking Corporations Act’, and has been on the pulse of Financial Services regulation since the beginning of the AFSL. So, if you’re thinking about self-licensing or if the regulator ever comes knocking, Jaime Lumsden Kelly (@jaimelumsdenkel), Solicitor Director from The Fold Legal (www.thefoldlegal.com.au) is who you’ll want to call.

In this episode, Clayton and Jaime discuss what self-licensing is, how it works and everything you need to consider if you’re thinking of going down the independent path. Jaime gives examples of how some Advisers have come unstuck, the risks associated with self-licensing and what she believes is the root cause of conflict between ASIC and Advisers (and how we might fix it).

Like most entrepreneurial journeys, Drew Davison’s (LinkedIn: drew-davison-b0013aba/) began when he saw a huge pain point for agents in the digital marketing of real estate. This led to his light bulb moment on a beach in October 2013 where B4 Real Estate (www.b4.com.au) was born; a piece of tech now being dubbed the ‘Tinder of Real Estate’.

This episode is a deep dive and step by step discussion into the long and arduous, but rewarding journey of bringing a real-time property app to market. Drew reflects on things he would do differently and how he used an out-of-the-box marketing strategy to make noise in a market dominated by two giant players.

From the humble beginnings of a ten-person startup in 2010, to now being one of the Australia’s fastest growing companies with 700 + staff, ex-financial planner and devoted family man Chris Muddell (LinkedIn: chris-muddell-41132a14/) has been at the forefront of growth and sales at Employsure (www.employsure.com.au) – an innovative external HR solution for small businesses.

Chris’ authentic approach to building relationships and helping SME’s create rock solid employment relations is phenomenal. This episode is full of great banter and plenty of insights as Chris educates the XY team on how to nurture employees to be self-starters, why setting expectations during the employee on boarding process is crucial and how to authentically integrate a sales mentality as an adviser.
