You’ve heard the term ‘holistic advice’, but what does it actually mean and how do you shift yours or your boss’ way of thinking to adopt this more modern approach to financial advice?
Andrew Shakespeare (@ajshakey82) of The JSA Group (www.jsagroup.com.au), and 2010’s AFA Rising Star Award Winner leads a team of financial professionals who are consistently looking beyond client’s investment returns and super balances to develop strategies that are far more meaningful and valuable to their client’s wealth and wellbeing.
In this short and sweet episode with Ben and Clayton, Andrew explains why he rarely starts with traditional financial planning concepts in the first meeting, how he prices initial and ongoing advice, how to attract organic referrals and why it’s conversations like this one that are important ones to be having in light of the Royal Commission and the future state of financial advice.

Advisers don’t start a financial planning business purely to take on and manage employees. But growth often requires more people, so how do you master the hiring, managing and firing of staff within your business? Enter Natasha Hawker (@NatashaHawker) of Employee Matters (https://www.employeematters.com.au/)
The proof that Natasha is a HR guru is seen in the sheer number of topics she covers in this in-depth discussion with Clayton, Ben and special guest host Dean Holmes. The fact that she’s hired, managed and fired over 15,000 people in her career is another indication of her expert status when it comes to attracting the best staff and maintaining employee longevity.
Natasha explains why there’s been a shift in the hiring market, how to nail the interview process and hire great talent, how to set new employees up for success, legal responsibilities that employers may not even be aware of and much, MUCH more.

Ever heard of dreams driven advice? What about speaking with purpose? It’s these out of the box topics and more that Peita Diamantidis (@peitad) of Caboodle Financial Services (www.caboodlefs.com.au/) has been exploring and is keen as ever to share with the XY Adviser community.
Known as a speaker, author and financial adviser and loved for being a geek hybrid and wish activist; Peita dives into why storytelling is a powerful sales strategy, how to nail a presentation when you’re not a natural speaker and how to incorporate dreams driven advice into your service offering (and what it actually is).
This quite simply, is a podcast for modern advisers.

This episode explores why young people in Australia are saving less on average and what Steve is doing with his clients to address this, the current state of the lending market and how advisers can bridge this gap with clients, how businesses can position new services with their licensees and why Steve would love to see fee for service come in as an option for mortgage lending.

When a podcast starts with challenging the notion of what Financial Planning actually is, you know it’s going to be good. Our guest is Andrew ‘Rocksy’ Rocks (LinkedIn: /andrewrocks) and he’s the CEO and ‘healthiest employer’ from the Announcer Group (www.announcer.com.au); a boutique and bespoke financial services practice shaking up the status quo and traditional financial planning model like you wouldn’t believe.
This discussion between Andrew, Clayton and Adrian is definitely not short on humour, insight or wit. With over 20 years experience in the financial services game, Andrew knows more than a thing or two and explains why a one-size-fits-all communication process in your business won’t work with clients, what the leading indicator of the health of your business is and how to incorporate intergenerational meetings into your service offering.
If you’ve been asking how you can move away from the traditional (and dated) financial planning model and differentiate yourself in the market, this is the podcast for you.

We’re talking vertical integration, fee for no service, grandfathering, FASEA and the Royal Commission itself.
Philip and Marc do a great job of sharing their insights and providing a ‘big picture’ overview regarding the cost of advice and how we can leverage technology to work towards a more sustainable advice profession [for all involved].

“Second only to your health is your financial wellbeing. We [the driven and passionate advisers] have a big role to play to ensure the Australian public are looked after financially” – Dante De Gori
At a time when impugning comments about this industry we all love are being flung around left right and centre, Dante De Gori (@ddegori10)of the FPA (Financial Planning Association - www.fpa.com.au) believes this is also a great opportunity to start producing positive content that highlights the benefits consumers receive when they engage with an adviser and implement a financial plan.
This is a thought-provoking and informative podcast that is sure to spike your curiosity and get you thinking about the current and future state of the advice-giving process and how we price our services accordingly.
The highlight reel of this podcast includes a discussion around why the ongoing relationship piece with clients is continually changing, why we have to get better at nailing the intangibles of our service offerings, what we are doing to charge for advice and Dante’s take on what financial advice will look like in 5 years.
Any advisers who would like to contribute to the FPA's Money & Life Website (which includes a consumer audience of nearly 500,000 visits and 10,000 subscribers) is encouraged to contact the FPA marketing team at fpa@fpa.com.au.

In this episode, you’re going to hear how a children’s story about a rhino and a monkey can help financial advisers understand their clients better and in turn provide amazing value. Quite frankly, we think it’s pretty spot on.
Our guest is Daniel Murray (LinkedIn:/daniel-empathicconsulting) of Empathic Consulting (www.empathicconsulting.com). He’s the applied mathematics corporate turned empathy coach combining formulas with emotions. He has a toolbox of strategies designed to help advisers benefit from incorporating empathy into their value proposition and business model.
Daniel walks us through what ‘The Skill of Empathy’ is and how we can apply it, how diverse brains can positively impact your business outcomes, how to use empathy to combat societal and client expectations and why we should all stay curious.
Be sure to listen all the way through as Daniel shares an empathy experiment all advisers can try.

XY Adviser started when a handful of curious financial advisers wanted to know what others in the industry were doing and how they could improve their business practices. From just a couple hundred members to now etching towards 2,000 with an average active user rate of 70% each day, it’s obvious the Facebook Group (www.facebook.com/groups/xyadviser) is the heart and soul of what makes the XY community so great!
In this podcast, Clayton and Adrian discuss how the community has evolved over time and give us a sneak peek at the biggest thing to hit XY in just a few weeks (hint: it will provide a crazy level of value for advisers!). The conversation also steers in other directions as they shoot the breeze on the best adviser business model, how to incorporate tech while still providing a high touch client experience, the benefit of having an initial consult fee and how advisers could incorporate ‘lifestyle management’ into their value proposition.
Opinions, ideas, hacks and rants - this episode has it all.
A big thank you and virtual high five goes out to our major partner HUB24 (www.hub24.com.au) and also to Centuria (www.centuria.com.au) for their support in helping us collectively drive our profession forward.
Caitlin Iles’ (@ms_iles) story is one we’re sure Universal Studios wish they could get their hands on. After discovering she was dyslexic in year 12 she then went on to start a property investment company in Dubai at the age of 24, receive an invitation to Necker Island from ‘Mr. Virgin’ himself and is now creating the largest portfolio of female founded startups through her Venture Capital firm Capital XX (www.capitalxx.com).
Her extensive knowledge and passion becomes very apparent as she explains the current situation and the benefits of having female founders in the startup world, the most important trait entrepreneurs need to have, how to carry out due diligence on potential investments, why the traditional VC model hasn’t necessarily been the most optimal and how advisers, both male and female can (really) disrupt the financial advice space.
To anyone who has ever thought of giving the startup world a go, especially those with the XX chromosome, do not let fear, concern or worry get in the way because “to be an entrepreneur, you need to be a little bit crazy” – Caitlin Iles.
A big thank you to our major partner HUB24 (www.hub24.com.au) and also to Centuria (www.centuria.com.au) for supporting the podcast that is driving the positive evolution of financial advice.
After ‘retiring’ from the unique Latvian sporting code that is Novus, Berin Delforce (@stickmanwealth) of Stickman Wealth Management (www.stickmanwealth.com.au) switched the snooker-like table for SOA’s. He never initially had his sights set on Financial Planning though. It was only after a tumultuous job history (his words, not ours) that he saw a great entrepreneurial opportunity within the industry.
Not too dissimilar to the Novus game, this podcast bounces around in all kinds of directions and elaborates on some great topics such as Berin’s early business challenges, the philosophy behind his awesome business name, the key to successfully outsourcing, when you should niche down in a business and how advisers can delight their clients.
While touching on the client experience, Berin throws it out to the audience and asks what other XY advisers are doing to delight their clients; to go beyond the expected level of service and differentiate themselves in the market. You can jump in on the conversation and reach out to Berin at hello@stickmanwealth.com.au.
A big thank you to our major sponsor HUB24 (www.hub24.com.au) and to Centuria (www.centuria.com.au) for the continued support.
We think it’s fair to say that despite being one of the most debated topics within the XY Community, it’s also a topic that fosters the biggest absence of knowledge. We are of course talking about… cryptocurrency.
To combat this, we’ve brought in one of the most qualified people in this space to define, debunk and dive into the ins and outs of cryptocurrency. As a qualified accountant, stock broker, financial adviser and business coach to over 4,000 financial planners, Warrick Pleash (@warrickpleash) the now partner manager of Bitcoin Trader (www.bitcointrader.org.au/) uses some awesome (and hilarious) analogies to explain what crypto is, what a blockchain is, how crypto is valued, where it sits relative to estate planning, market volatility of bitcoin and crypto’s place within an investment strategy.
The aim of this podcast is to simply help advisers understand the fundamentals of cryptocurrency better so that when faced with a question about the evolving ‘internet money’ from a client, a loved one or a friend, they can handle it from an informed and educated space.
A big thank you to our major partner Zurich (www.zurich.com.au) and Sunsuper (www.sunsuper.com.au) for the continued support.
Neil Rogan (www.linkedin.com/in/roganneil/) of Centuria (www.centuria.com.au/) is the guy turning investment bond jargon into terminology that advisers can easily understand and use with their clients. Thanks to the XY community for throwing up the investment bond discussion on several occasions; you asked and we listened.
This podcast explores the ins and outs of investment bonds – what they are and where they sit in the investment world, when you should consider an investment bond for your client, key features to look for in a bond, the estate planning advantages of investment bonds and the implications faced (or not faced) with legislative changes compared to superannuation.
Neil Rogan is in the business of equipping advisers with relevant tools to help them make informed decisions when looking at investment bonds for their clients.
A big thank you to our major partner Zurich (www.zurich.com.au) and also Sunsuper (www.sunsuper.com.au) for the continued support.
For those eagerly awaiting a smooth and sultry solo podcast from Clayton Daniel, unfortunately (or fortunately?!), thanks to Ben Nash you’ll have to continue waiting for that one. In this episode, Ben and Clayton shoot the breeze and give us an update on the XY Adviser community and discuss why this awesome group just might be the sanity check we all need as to where we, as advisers and the industry itself is headed.
We especially loved the conversation around these topics:
So what does the future of financial advice look like? Will more or less people seek out a financial adviser and what does the financial services profession look like in 10 years’ time?
A big thank you to our major partner Zurich and also to Sunsuper for the continued support.
Chris Bates of Wealthful is the Financial Adviser and Mortgage Broker with a very unique (and very successful) service offering for young families looking to ‘live a life fulfilled with what they value’.
Step inside his virtual LinkedIn abode and you’ll instantly get a feel for the kinds of ideas, information and opinions that swirl around in Chris’ head on the daily. With his short form posts reaching an audience of 20,000 + people a day, it’s obvious his stuff has a lot of merit and is having a very positive effect on his 18,000 + followers (and his bottom line).
This podcast swings in all kinds of directions and touches on some really interesting stuff like:
We’re just thankful Chris made it out of Africa prison-free to sit down and chat with us. Yep, for the full (uncensored) version of THAT story, you’ll definitely want to tune in for this episode…
A big thank you to Zurich our major partner and also to Sunsuper for the continued support.
“Our mission is to be the Amazon of Comparison sites” – Fred Schebesta
When it comes to Fred Schebesta, we could tell you about the digital agency business he started and then sold to a publicly listed company at the ripe age of 25. We could tell you about the plethora of awards he’s received OR we could just tell you that Fred has got the ‘direct to market’ business model crafted down to such a fine art, it’s the reason his company finder.com.au receives over 6 million unique visits a month! So what’s his secret?
If you want to:
…then this podcast has your name written all over it.
Let us let Fred leave you with this – “If you think that crypto is a scam, a pyramid scheme or it’s non-existent, you sound like someone who is looking at the early internet”.
And that’s coming from a guy who is about to launch a platform where sophisticated investors can buy cryptocurrency between $250k up to $300million!
A big thank you to our major partner Zurich and also SunSuper for the continued support.
What do the words dulcet and game-changing business coach have in common? Two words. Stewart Bell.
Stewart is the industrious business coach of Audere Coaching & Consulting who is teaching frustrated advisers how to turn their business challenges into opportunities.
Having spent the last two decades working with financial professionals, Stewart has seen significant shifts in the way our industry markets itself and how to do it effectively. Aside from the Tinder references, here’s our favourite takeaways from this podcast:
If not for the endless nuggets of wisdom, listen to this episode purely for the 'dulcet' sounds of Stewart Bell who will inspire you to think outside the box when it comes to innovation within your business.
A big thank you also to our major partner Zurich and also to SunSuper for the continued support.
“I’ll never invest money in a fund unless I meet the fund manager” – Paul Mann (True Direction Financial Services)
With 25 years of combined experience as a futures trader and a financial adviser, Paul Mann has watched the evolution of financial advice change from a very heavy sales culture to one that is more focused on making a lasting difference in clients lives. For Paul, transitioning into the advice space was an opportunity to make a significant contribution to society and to give back. Sure, he took a 75% cut in his wage when he got started, but was it worth it? Absolutely!
Fast forward to 2018 where you will now find the title ‘Principal and Financial Adviser’ on Paul’s office door. In this podcast, Paul expands on his past trading experience and how that has helped shape his client value proposition as a self-employed adviser. Our favourite key takeaways from this discussion look at:
From a chalkie on the stock exchange, to building a company from 8 to 65 employees globally, Paul Mann has a level of knowledge and understanding that can only come from years of experience working in the trenches of financial advice. For a bunch of fresh ideas and some interesting history on the industry, this is a podcast you don’t want to miss.
As always, we would like to thank our major partner Zurich and also SunSuper for the continued support.
If marketing, public relations and social media were like Kung-Fu, Adele Martin is definitely your Bruce Lee. She’s the Money Mentor, financial adviser and keynote speaker who has nailed the one-to-many market and continues to use her trusted personal brand to grow and scale her advice business, and boy is it growing.
She’s a big believer in a sharing economy and is full of tested ideas and strategies that will help you build trusted relationships with your clients, position yourself as a leader in the industry and increase your bottom line.
Of the many nuggets of wisdom shared in this podcast (and there’s so many), here’s our standouts:
Let’s be honest, a 45-minute podcast is just not enough, so we’ll have Adele front and centre at our event next week in Sydney for a ‘warts ‘n all’ discussion around using digital media to scale your business and master your client value proposition. This event is a must for employed, aspiring and self-employed advisers. If you can’t attend the event in person, be sure to tune into the Facebook Live on Thursday 22nd Feb at 6:30pm.

If you’re an active member in the XY community, you’ve probably seen her name start to pop up regularly, you may have even connected with her some way, somehow. But what do you actually know about XY’s newest team member, the new Community Manager – Emily Blanch?
Experience wise, Emily is a mixed bag of paraplanning, online media and writing, but she is totally in her element when she is delivering an unforgettable client or customer experience. She can’t tell a story without using her hands and if she could, she’d climb to a tall building somewhere and shout it out to the world that travelling (at some point in your life) is without a doubt the best thing you can do for your health, your wealth and your happiness.
Amongst the travelling stories, the clichés (all of the clichés) and some of the amazing things XY Adviser has coming up this year, here’s our favourite highlights:
If travelling has ever been on your radar, we’re pretty sure Emily’s stories will have you wanting to book a ticket overseas now (apologies to employers everywhere). But if getting an employee back with a fresh perspective, a new outlook and a sense of accomplishment and motivation, we think that’s a pretty good return on investment.
P.S. This podcast is best enjoyed with a cold beer!
And as always, a big thank you to our major partner ZURICH and also to SunSuper for the continued support.
Glen James is the financial adviser whose life does not revolve around his work. Instead, he moulds his work around his life up on the Central Coast and enjoys every minute of it. After starting his business Fortify Financial at the ripe age of 25, Glen recalls being young enough and dumb enough to think he could do it – and it turns out he could. With 8 years under his belt as a self-employed adviser, Glen has discovered what works and what doesn’t work in his business and shares with us some of the lessons and ideas he has picked up along the way, like:
Plus much, much more…
This podcast is full of witty remarks, memorable one-liners and a bunch of new ideas and strategies that will have you thinking about how to shake things up within your practice and with your clients.

As always, we'd like to give a big shout out to our major partner Zurich and to SunSuper for the continued support.
At the age of 20, James Millard had it all figured out. He was going to make it big in the clothing industry, sell his ‘Insufficient Funds’ branded T-shirts to Billabong and never work a day in his life. Unfortunately for James this dream never eventuated, but fortunately for us, this failed business venture sent James down a 10-year career path in personal finance for which he now co-owns YOLO Financial Services, hustles a lifestyle blog called ‘Sufficient Fundz’ and shares with us a some of the cool and innovative things he and his partners are trying within their business.
Amongst the many topics discussed, here’s some we really liked:
Between juggling a financial planning business, maintaining a blog and recently adding the title ‘Dad’ to his repertoire, James has also kindly put his hand up to be the MC at our upcoming event in Sydney (thanks legend!) with a discussion around starting and scaling an advice business. With a power panel of speakers and an MC all with startup financial advice practices, it’s guaranteed to be a night full of great ideas, advice and inspiration. Click here to grab your tickets.
