Being a Financial Advisor is not all that different to being a cop, according to Shane Black of Pearl Financial that is.

As an ex police officer, Shane uses behavioural psychology to help clients get in tune with what’s actually important to them, rather than what they think should be important to them.

He’s a ‘Masters of Applied Finance’ graduate who switched from law enforcement to Financial Advice in 2012 and has been helping his client’s kick their biggest financial and lifestyle goals ever since. When he’s not working with clients or spending time with his young son William, you can find him cracking plenty of (dad) jokes in the XY Facebook Group (www.facebook.com/groups/XYAdviser).

Here’s the nuggets of FP gold from this episode:

5:32 – Why Shane re-branded to his business four years ago

8:23 – What Shane’s work hours looked like before his son was born to now and how he’s adjusted his workflows

10:21 – Virtual outsourcing and the first task Shane gave to a virtual assistant

17:15 – Where Shane find clients and his referral strategy

23:02 – What is Shane working on in his business now? Hint: the key theme is content

29:45 – What Shane does really well as an advisor, and what he wants to be really good at next

39:15 – Shane’s mission, and why he enjoys working with professionals and business people

With marketing being the single biggest topic of discussion in the XY Community (www.facebook.com/groups/XYAdviser), we’re kicking off a brand-new series within the XY Podcast focused entirely on, yep you guessed it - marketing. Tailored for Financial Advisors but applicable to all other industry professionals, these episodes are going to give you practical examples and step by step processes with a look into how the most successful advisors are nailing this space.

First cab off the rank is none other than Ben Nash (LinkedIn:/benjaminjnash/) - Founder and Adviser of Pivot Wealth (www.pivotwealth.com.au) and Co-Founder of XY Adviser. Aside from a very strong beard game, Ben has built his advice business from scratch using a strategic and unique marketing strategy. This strategy evolved from Ben’s desire to never rely on anyone else to find clients, and we can confidently say he is nailing it.

This episode is a deep dive into the exact process Ben used to market his business and attract clients from day one. You’ll hear about the coaches, programs and mentors Ben has leveraged in building his business, why a support network has been a vital part of his success, how he promoted his live workshops and the impact they had on his audience, Ben’s total game changer when it comes to explaining his fees to prospective clients and why incremental improvements trumps trying to ‘jump the great wall’ every time.

Do you think Superannuation companies are taking advantage of Australians by having them unwittingly pay away their retirement funds in super fees? Chris Brycki thinks so.

Chris Brycki (LinkedIn: /in/brycki/ ) is the Founder and CEO of Stockspot (https://www.stockspot.com.au) – an online investment robo-advice company with a mission to help more Australians access expert investment advice and portfolio management. He’s also on a mission to do away with high fees, confusing jargon and lack of transparency which he believes is giving Financial Services a bad reputation.

In this episode, Chris sits down with Clayton and Ray from XY Adviser to discuss Stockspot’s annual ‘Fat Cat’ Report, why Chris believes super companies are experiencing diseconomies of scale, why Chris started a robo-advice company and whether it can be integrated with traditional Financial Advice and why you need an ‘edge’ when making an investment decision.

As a Financial Advisor, you know you have the skills to implement strategies and help your clients achieve what they want in life, but how’s your sales skills? Do you tailor your communication methods to suit individual clients and provide a great experience? How do you demonstrate your worth as an advisor and overcome any objections?

Davina Poletto (LinkedIn:/davinapoletto/) is the Customer Success Coach from SalesITV (www.salesitv.com.au) with 20 years’ combined experience in funds management with a brief period as a Financial Advisor. Having always had a passion for sales and from her experience in Financial Services, Davina believes somewhere along the way sales has become a dirty word when it really doesn’t have to be.

In this episode, Adrian and Davina discuss the negative impact excessive administration and compliance requirements has on delivering great advice, why advisors need a solid support system to deliver compliant advice, why sales skills are an integral part of the advice process and the outcome of selling ethically versus selling in a pushy or aggressive manner.

One thing we know about the XY Community is they love hearing from other Financial Advisors and listening to what they’ve been up to, and one very interesting Advisor who is well worth hearing from is the ‘grandad’ of XY Adviser – Dean Holmes (LinkedIn:/mrdeanholmes/).

Dean is the Co-Founder and Wealth Advisor at Absolute Wealth Advisors (www.absolutewealthadvisors.com.au). He also supports four other innovative Financial Advice businesses under his AFSL The Wealth Network (www.wealthnetwork.net.au). When it comes to taking on new advisors under his license ‘wing’, Dean says choosing the right people is crucial; there must be an alignment of vision and an alignment of values between both parties because the decisions you make about people in the front end of your world ultimately affect the decisions you make within your businesses later on.

In this episode you’ll learn how to find the right people to join your organisation, the benefit of incorporating a business coaching program into your organisation (and the one Dean uses), the importance of building trust with prospective clients and the different ways Dean has watched advisors in his network do this and the outcome Dean and Clayton would like to see from the Royal Commission.

When it comes to vertical integration and regulatory requirements in the advice industry, there’s no one more qualified to give us the 101 then Claire Wivell Plater (@ClaireWivPlat) of The Fold Legal (www.thefoldlegal.com.au).

In this insightful episode with Ray and Adrian of XY Adviser, Claire discusses whether the industry has an issue with ‘vertical integration’ or rather a ‘conflict of interest’. She also explains what Target Market Determination is and how it will help advisers provide more appropriate advice as well as the key to managing the potential issues that arise with in-house products.

If the words compliance, best interest duty or vertical integration have ever made your ears prick up, this is the episode you want to listen to.

Pop the virtual champagne – XY Adviser celebrates its 100th podcast episode - and what a ride it’s been! We invited XY legend Naomi Christopher (@naomi_midwinter) into the studio to reflect and reminisce on early podcast episodes, the modern adviser conference and the day the XY Adviser idea was born.

We also discuss how the XY community has evolved thanks to incredible peer to peer engagement (shout out to XY champion Dylan Martin) and give insights into what it’s like to moderate a group of 2,500 + professionals.

We look at how far advice has come, where it’s headed and how the XY Community is going to help it get there. And in light of everything going on in the industry, Ben poses the question – in 12 months from now, will more or less people have a financial adviser?

There has been plenty of discussions as well as some confusion in the XY community around QROPS. What is it (really) and how do we help our UK expat clients in this space compliantly? So to go beyond just the nuts and bolts of it all, we went straight to the source and invited Adam Turk (@adamdturk) – UK Expat and CEO of Harbourside Capital (www.harboursidecapital.com.au/) into the studio to give us the lowdown.

Aside from getting the ‘everything you need to know about QROPS’ spiel, this episode also explores (and debates) Best Interest Duty, holistic advice against vertical integration, important changes coming for anyone using an MDA and Adam’s take on passive investing.

Let the debate begin….

Chris Bates (LI: /christopherbates/) is one half of the brains behind new property podcast ‘The Elephant in the Room’ (www.theelephantintheroom.com.au/) which has already seen up to 300 downloads per day. It’s not your typical property podcast with Chris focusing on what buyers and sellers should and shouldn't do, whether or not we should trust real estate agents and how to play the 'auction' game.

In this episode, Chris (Director and Adviser of Wealthful - www.wealthful.com.au/) sits down with Ben and Clayton to discuss how his podcast has become an education piece for his clients, the impact and importance of behavioural finance (did someone say cognitive minimalism?), how Chris is streamlining his business processes before looking to hire and why staffing is such a pain point for new(ish) self-employed advisers.

He’s the CEO of Mainstream Superannuation Services  – a Superannuation Administration House, CEO of a small industry super fund, part owner of a Financial Planning firm and Director of a Research Firm, and that’s just his professional life.

He’s a wealth of knowledge in the finance space, which is why we sat down with Michael for a deep dive discussion into the history, the differences and the future of industry and retail funds, how to raise consumer engagement around super, why he believes the superannuation landscape will look vastly different in five years, passive vs. active investing and Michael’s process for choosing appropriate direct investments.

This episode is certainly relevant to all advisers and highlights some thought-provoking ideas and opinions on a wide range of topics.

This episode is one part stand-up comedy and one part thought-provoking discussion with Marcus sharing the process, the costs and considerations of setting up a new B2C podcast in the finance space, why he chose a podcast over blogging and why he shifted from Advice to Mortgage Broking (and is killing it in the referral space).

In this episode, Clayton and Jaime discuss what self-licensing is, how it works and everything you need to consider if you’re thinking of going down the independent path. Jaime gives examples of how some Advisers have come unstuck, the risks associated with self-licensing and what she believes is the root cause of conflict between ASIC and Advisers (and how we might fix it).

Like most entrepreneurial journeys, Drew Davison’s (LinkedIn: drew-davison-b0013aba/) began when he saw a huge pain point for agents in the digital marketing of real estate. This led to his light bulb moment on a beach in October 2013 where B4 Real Estate (www.b4.com.au) was born; a piece of tech now being dubbed the ‘Tinder of Real Estate’.

This episode is a deep dive and step by step discussion into the long and arduous, but rewarding journey of bringing a real-time property app to market. Drew reflects on things he would do differently and how he used an out-of-the-box marketing strategy to make noise in a market dominated by two giant players.
